The music in Wattstax is a volatile mix of funk, blues, r&b, gospel and soul. Over the years words and beats from Wattstax have repeatedly shown up across the Hip Hop charts sampled by the likes of Public Enemy, TuPac and Cypress Hill to name a few.

The film includes not just footage from the L.A. Coliseum, but also several performances filmed in the community of Watts including the incendiary funk romp of "Jody's Got Your Girl And Gone" by Johnnie Taylor captured live at the legendary L.A. nightspot the Summit Club! Plus a stunning rendition of the gospel standard "Peace Be Still" sung by The Emotions at a neighborhood church.
